5 Facebook Automation Rules To Help You Scale Your Ad Campaigns

Writer's picture: Matthew K.Matthew K.

If you have been running Facebook ads for a while now and are looking to automate certain functions within your Facebook Ad Manager than Facebook automated rules can help.

Here are a few ways that Facebook automated rules can help you scale your Facebook campaigns.

  • Save Time: The goal of the automated rules that will be discussed is to cut down on your time in the Facebook ads manager.

  • Reduce Cost: Ultimately, by creating an automated rule you are attempting to cut out human error when you change your Facebook ad campaigns.

  • Schedule Changes: My favorite feature, Facebook automated rules can turn on or off ads at a pre-determined time.

How Facebook Automated Rules Can Help You

That being said here are a few ways you can use Facebook's automated rules to scale your ad spend.

  • Automatically turning off underperforming ads during a selected time range.

  • Automatically decreasing the daily budget on ads that are not performing well.

  • Automatically turning on ads for a promotion that starts at midnight.

What Are Facebook Automated Rules

Facebook automated rules can be found in the Facebook ads manager.

To create automated rules select the rules drop-down from the ads manager.

There are three different types of automated rules you can create.

Custom Rules

With custom automated rules, you can create your automated rules based on conditions that you set.

When those conditions are met your automated rule will be triggered.

Typically, when I create automated rules this is the type of automated rule I will create as it can be customized to my needs.

Reduce Auction Overlap

You can see your auction overlap by going to the audience tab in the business manager and selecting two of your audiences and selecting the option to show audience overlap.

If you are noticing high degrees of audience overlap in your Facebook ad campaigns you can reduce this auction overlap by creating an automated rule for it.

By creating a rule you can reduce the chances that your ads bid against each other.

One downside I've found for this automated rule is that Facebook can pause underperforming ad sets in favor of the ad set that is performing better.

The problem occurs when both ad sets are performing well compared to my historical ad sets.

To mitigate this overlap as much as possible I generally try to avoid running multiple ad sets with the same target audience.

Audience Fragmentation Rules

The last automated rule you can set up is the audience fragmentation rule.

This automated rule is good if you have several active ad sets and overlap in your audience that is preventing your ads from being delivered efficiently.

This Facebook automated rule will combine similar audiences' ad sets to boost performance and spend your budget more efficiently.

Facebook Automated Rules Layout

Before diving into the 5 Facebook automated rules you should be using. Let's take a look at the default layout for automated rules.

The default layout includes:

  • WHERE to apply the automatic rules to.

  • The ACTION to be performed by the automated rule.

  • CONDITIONS that will trigger your automated rule

  • SCHEDULE when you want this automated rule to be triggered

To use these default rules simply create a new custom rule and then edit the settings to fit your campaign.

How Do I Create An Automated Rule In Facebook

To create an automated rule select the rules drop-down from the ads manager. Then click on “create new rule”.

You can either choose from one of Facebook’s default rules or create a custom rule.

We are going to create a custom rule and provide a rule name.

I want this rule to check is on all my active campaigns.

In this case, I"m choosing the ACTION to turn off campaigns.

I could increase the budget or decrease the daily budget.

This increase or decrease in the daily budget is based on CONDITIONS.

Above are some of the most common conditions.

We could have a scenario where the cost per result is above our target cost per acquisition we decrease the daily budget.

Maybe if we hit a certain number of results. Let's say above 50 to get out of the learning phase, we increase the daily budget.

We can even add more than one condition. Above we created an automated rule that turns off our campaign if we see a CPA above $50 and we've spent more than $400 on any active Facebook ad Campaigns.

For my automated rule, I chose to turn off any campaign that contains my promo name in it, "Black Friday".

The last setting you can adjust is the time range. I will be using the same Facebook ad campaign to run my Facebook ads for Black Friday as Cyber Monday.

So I need a Facebook ad automation that turns off all ads mentioning Black Friday or Cyber Monday on Tuesday at midnight.

You can copy this rule for any promo you are running. With a few changes, you can turn on any Black Friday ad campaigns in your ads manager on Friday at midnight.

Below are those changes.

This rule is the first of 5 rules that I use for scaling an ad account. Don't stay up till midnight waiting to publish your Facebook ad any longer.

Facebook Automated Rules To Help You Scale

Below are 4 more Facebook ad rules to help you scale your ad account by saving you time and reducing your Facebook ads cost.

Reduce Cost & Save Time With Ad Budget-Focused Automated Rules

Increase the Evergreen campaign budget daily.

You can change the action frequency below to change the budget weekly.

Decrease budget based on Cost Per Result if target cost is not reached in 1 week. Choose 1 week to make sure that your campaign budget has time to spend and that you get at least 8,000 impressions to your Campaign.

Pause underperforming ads within an ad set.

Keep in mind that when we use cost per result this could include leads, purchases, etc. So be sure that all active ads have the same result. In this case purchase.

If you want to specify just purchases you can select the purchase condition.

Scale budget by $250-$500 if the cost per purchase for a target audience is at a certain target value.

Looking for a cost per result of $50.

We can specify the result by choosing purchases in the conditions field.

Create Facebook Automated Rules To Scale Your Business

Hopefully, these Facebook Automated rules help you manage your own Facebook Ad spend and provide you with some ideas on rules that you can create.

Facebook ad rules should cut down on your time in the Ads Manager. As well as reduce costs by catching out-of-control spending.

Just be sure that you have a firm grasp of the key metrics that drive your business. Otherwise, you could set automated rules that pause ads that are performing or turn on underperforming Facebook ads.
