In this guide, we will be providing an overview of setting up your Facebook Ad Manager. As well as helping you through some of the roadblocks you may encounter if you are setting up your account for the first time.

We are assuming you have set up your Instagram account, Facebook business page, and Facebook Business Manager.

If this is your first time using the Facebook ad manager you can get there from within your Business Manager account by selecting all tools on the left side menu. Then select the ads manager.

Select Ads Manager from all tools in the business manager

Basic Setup For Facebook Advertising

If you have not set up your Facebook business page. You can do that at facebook.com/pages/creation. Or you can follow our guide for creating your Facebook business page. One of the most important pieces for running ads on Facebook is that these ads are connected to your Facebook business page and not your personal Facebook account. If you have a personal Facebook account you will need to create a business page before you can continue with this guide.

If you haven't set up your Facebook Business Manager Account you will need a business manager account before we can dive into your ad manager. This is because your Facebook ad manager will be located within your business manager account.

Setting up the business manager is easy. If you would like to learn more about what the Facebook Business Manager can do we have created a getting started guide for you.

The Business Manager guide does a great job of covering the setup as well as an overview of the settings of the Facebook Business Manager.

What Is The Facebook Ad Manager?

The Facebook ad manager is a tool that allows you to create, manage, and track your ad campaigns on Facebook.

When you first log in to your ad manager you will see an overview of all your ad campaigns. If you have no campaigns you will see something that looks like this.

New Facebook ads manager account

From this page, you can create a new ad campaign or edit ads for an existing ad campaign.

As mentioned earlier the ad manager will also allow you to track the performance of your Facebook ads. You can see how many people have clicked on your ad, how much money you have spent, and how many people have purchased from your ad.

Your Facebook Business Manager Account

Let's get started. You can think of the business manager as your central hub from here, you as the admin can grant access to the different assets you own through Meta... Facebook.

For example, we want an employee or agency to run ads from within our Facebook Ad Manager to do this we need to create an ad account within the business manager and grant them access.

Business Account Versus Your Business Settings

To set up our Facebook ad account click the gear at the bottom left of the home page. This is will take us to our business account settings.

Business account settings page

If you're new to Facebook business manager, you might be wondering what the difference is between your account settings and your business settings.

Your account settings control everything related to your ad accounts. This includes things like adding a new ad account, changing your ad account spend limit, and managing ad account permissions.

On the other hand, your business settings control everything else related to your business manager account. This includes things like adding new users, changing your business name and primary page, and managing payments.

So if you're ever unsure of where to find a certain setting, just remember that ad account settings are under the "Accounts" tab, while everything else is under the "Settings" tab.

Connecting Your Assets To Your Business Manager

Before you can launch your first Facebook ads. You need to connect your various Facebook assets to the Business Manager. This includes your: Facebook business page, Instagram business account, ad account, and Facebook Pixel.

There are other assets that you can connect including your catalog. To launch your first Facebook ads having this connection is not needed. So we will not walk through connecting these other assets as it is not essential for launching your first Facebook ads.

Creating Your New Ad Account

The first asset we will create is your Facebook ad account.

Your ad account allows you to create and manage your ads. If you don't have an ad account you won't be able to launch ads within the Facebook ad manager.

From within your business manager select business assets, the blue button at the top right of your screen.

Select the drop-down menu for advertising and choose the ad account option. From here you can create your new ad account.

This process for connecting to Instagram is almost identical to connecting to your Facebook page.

Sharing Your Facebook Assets With Team

Now that you have connected all your assets to the Business Manager you have everything you need to launch your first Facebook ads.

In the future, you may want to grant access to an internal team member or have an agency request access to your Facebook ad account.

This is what your Business settings are for. You can get there by going to https://business.facebook.com/settings or clicking on the gear in the bottom left corner of your screen when within you your ad manager.

Use Business settings to share new assets with team or partners

As you can see I have given myself access to all my ad assets except my Facebook pixel.

To do this I click on the add assets button while my name is selected.

From here I can choose what to add to my user profile. In this case, I give myself the ability to manage the Facebook pixel

Sharing Facebook pixel with team member

Within the settings page, you can manage employee access for your internal team as well as any partner request that comes through.

Managing this access can be helpful if you have multiple Facebook pages or Facebook ad accounts and wish to grant users access to certain ad account and certain pages while excluding others.
